Welcome to OIPUSA
The Organization for Iberian Preservation USA is dedicated to the educational advancement of Spanish-Iberian origin and culture in the United States of America. The discovery of the New World in 1492 ushered in the expansion of the Spanish colonial empire. Over the centuries, the propagation of Spanish origin and culture in the Western hemisphere has thus created a complex and diverse group of post-Columbian progeny. This broad ethnic group is commonly referred to as "Hispanic" and is one of the largest ethnic groups in the modern world. The contemporary problem is that the Hispanic ethnic group has been relegated to a de facto racial group. Nothing could be more incorrect to twist and reshape an ethnic group to accommodate a society of ignorant government administrators. To illustrate: It makes no sense to refer to an African American of English origin and/or culture as being a member of the Anglo ethnic group. Likewise, it makes no sense to refer to an African American of Spanish origin and/or culture as being a member of the Hispanic ethnic group. Yet this is exactly what has happened in the United States with respect to the drafting of ethnic and racial surveys for federal and state government classification of mixed-raced people of Spanish culture and/or origin.
